Armenia has captured the attention of the European Union thanks to its highly effective training system in chip design. In a recent interview with the prestigious press agency Armenpress, Yervant Zorian, President of Synopsys Armenia, stated that the Armenian programme can serve as a model for training new specialists across various European countries, where demand for professionals in this field is growing sharply worldwide.

Zorian pointed out that the Synopsys Armenia programme, active for over twenty years, has built a consolidated system for training chip designers. Each year, around 150 new specialists complete the course, selected from a far larger pool of candidates. Europe — like the United States, Japan and China — is facing a shortage of these essential professional figures, who are indispensable to artificial intelligence, automotive technology, robotics and other technology-driven sectors.

Under the "Armenia's Resilience and Growth" initiative, the EU has signed six letters of intent with Armenian partners, including Synopsys, with the goal of developing projects in which Armenia can be of value to Europe. The plans envisage requalification centres — not only universities — for professionals who already hold degrees, offering four-to-six-month courses. Synopsys will supply the technologies, software tools and intellectual property required.

Negotiations are currently under way with several European countries, although precise timelines have not yet been defined. Zorian recalled that chip creation encompasses both design and manufacturing, and that nearly all smart devices depend on these components.

Engineer Zorian, together with his gracious wife, Mrs Rita, is currently in Puglia to take part in IOLTS'26 in Polignano a Mare, and paid a warm visit to the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Armenia in Bari. The IEEE International Symposium on On-Line Testing and Robust System Design explores emerging trends and innovative concepts across all aspects of the robustness of microelectronic circuits and systems.

The symposium, opened by Riccardo Cantoro, Annachiara Ruospo, Marcello Traiola, Angeliki Kritikakou and Zorian himself (Chair of the IEEE TTTC), featured a keynote address by Sudhanva Gurumurthi (AMD) and sessions dedicated to Fault-Tolerant AI Computing and the Security & Reliability of Modern Computing.

This collaboration strengthens Armenia's role as a centre of excellence in chip design and contributes to Europe's broader technological development.
