"The Republic of Armenia Condemns Azerbaijan’s Aggression on the Border Amid Global Coronavirus Fight" by Carlo Coppola
The Armenian Foreign Ministry strongly condemns the attempts by Azerbaijan to escalate the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border that occurred yesterday, March 30, 2020. This was stated by Anna Naghdalyan, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, during a press briefing.
This violation of the ceasefire is without justification, especially at a time when all global resources—including medical personnel and supplies in the region—are being directed toward the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Details of the Border Incident in Tavush
We recall that on March 30, 2020, at 7:00 PM, the Azerbaijani side attempted a diversionary penetration into Armenian positions in the Noyemberyan province of the Tavush region. Thanks to the prompt action of the Armenian Armed Forces, the enemy was repelled. Information regarding Azerbaijani losses is being clarified.
The Armenian side reported no fatalities; however, two soldiers sustained minor injuries during the operation.
Simultaneously, the Azerbaijani side targeted the villages of Baganis and Voskevan, injuring a child from Voskevan who was on a balcony at the time of the aggression. The child’s life is not in danger, and doctors indicate that their condition is stable. The injured child was transported to the “Holy Mother of God” medical center in Yerevan.
Context: Nagorno-Karabakh Presidential Elections
The timing of this aggression may be vaguely associated with an attempt to intimidate or retaliate against Armenia—though not officially confirmed—on the eve of the Presidential elections of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).
The elections were held this morning in the de facto Republic, featuring 14 candidates for the Presidency: Christine Balayan, Vitaly Balasanyan, Sergey Amiryan, David Babayan, Bela Lalayan, Arayik Harutyunyan, Hayk Khanumyan, David Ishkhanyan, Vahan Badasyan, Masis Mayilyan, Ashot Ghulyan, Ruslan Israelyan, Ashot Dadayan, and Melsik Poghosyan.
