The Karen Demirchyan Museum in Yerevan opened the exhibition "Героическая эпопея" (Heroic Epic), dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The event marks the beginning of the "Night at the Museum" initiative, organized to coincide with the International Museum Day of Armenia in 2025.The exhibition presents archival documents, wartime photographs, triangular letters from the front, weapons, personal effects and pieces of military uniforms. Among the exhibits are the greatcoat of Colonel Mikhail Sirunyan, commander of the 390th Rifle Regiment of the 89th Taman Division, and the military jacket of Colonel Nerses Baloyan, commander of the 261st Rifle Division, donated by their descendants.
Some exhibits come from the prestigious museums of the "Moscow House International Cultural and Business Center" in Yerevan, including the photo exhibition "Война в истории моей страны" (War in the History of My Country), which highlights the contribution of Armenians to the Victory, and from the Military History Museum "Mother Armenia" in the Armenian capital.
During the opening, the director of the Karen Demirchyan Museum, Vahagn Mamyan, stressed the importance of celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory in World War II not only on May 9, but throughout the year. He highlighted the invaluable contribution of the Armenian people to the victory and the importance of preserving the historical truth against attempts at distortion.
Tamara Sirunyan, director of the Karen Demirchyan Foundation, and Hayk Melikyan, director of the Moscow House in Yerevan, also reiterated the inadmissibility of rewriting the heroic history of the Second World War, which Armenians and many peoples of the USSR call the Great Patriotic War. They stressed the duty to convey the historical truth to future generations to prevent the repetition of similar tragedies. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Russian Embassy in Armenia, public organizations and cultural figures. Visitors had the opportunity to watch the screening of the documentary film "Nelson", which tells the story of the Armenian pilot Nelson Stepanyan, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. Stepanyan, known as the "Baltic Storm Bird", took part in numerous missions during the Second World War, distinguishing himself with his courage and sacrifice. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for the second time on March 6, 1945.
The Karen Demirchyan Museum, founded on January 9, 2001, is dedicated to the memory of the Armenian statesman Karen Demirchyan. This now iconic place for understanding Armenian history of the second half of the twentieth century houses documents, photographs, personal objects and works of art related to the life and work of Demirchyan. The material has been collected and lovingly preserved over the years - by his family, friends and admirers - with the aim of educating the younger generations in the patriotic spirit and passing on the personal memory and political thought of the great statesman barbarically killed in the massacre of October 27, 1999 in the Armenian parliament.
The exhibition "Heroic Epic" represents an important opportunity to reflect on the contribution of the Armenian people to the victory in the Great Patriotic War and to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.
