Apulia and Armenia continue to weave their centuries-old historical trajectories, fostering a cultural and institutional dialogue open to the future yet firmly anchored in shared memory. Fitting into this tradition of long-standing friendship was the first official visit to Bari by Dr. Gegham Adamyan, First Counselor of the Republic of Armenia to Italy, who arrived in the Apulian capital for a high-profile cultural event.

The meeting, held in the solemn setting of the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Bari, was dedicated to the presentation of the volume Nor Arax and the Armenians in Bari: in the national and foreign media (1924–1962), co-authored by myself and Dr. Siranush Quaranta. The large and distinguished attendance of representatives from institutions, academia, and the Consular Corps — including Senator Filippo Melchiorre, MP Gianmauro Dell’Olio, and the Consul General of the Republic of Georgia in Bari, Dr. Irakli Koiava — reaffirmed the strong interest that the history of the Armenian community and its valuable contribution to the civic and cultural growth of our territory continue to evoke.

Serving in Italy since January 16, 2026, Dr. Gegham Adamyan combines solid institutional experience with a rigorous academic background. Having earned his PhD in Political Science in 2013 from one of Armenia's most prestigious university institutions, he boasts a strong passion for teaching and scientific research in the fields of international law and contemporary geopolitical balances, as evidenced by his extensive scientific publications dedicated to self-determination dynamics and international recognition.

Prior to his prestigious assignment in Rome, Dr. Adamyan served in the European Department (Եվրոպայի վարչություն) of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the structure responsible for relations with Western, Central, and Balkan European countries, as well as with the Council of Europe and the European Union. In this capacity, he gained broad expertise in managing bilateral and multilateral political dialogue, drafting agreements and conventions, participating in interministerial consultations, and promoting economic and cultural cooperation initiatives. This first-rate diplomatic background is set to further consolidate relations between Yerevan and Italy, with fruitful impacts on Southern Italy as well.

During the ceremony, Dr. Adamyan represented Ambassador H.E. Vladimir Karapetyan — whose Special Peace Award was recalled, along with his constant attention to Apulia since the early months of his mandate — winning over the audience with an incisive address characterized by impeccable institutional poise and sincere warmth in dialogue with local citizens and the Armenian community.

At the end of the visit, the First Counselor expressed deep gratitude for the welcome received, hoping for a prompt return to Apulia to follow up on concrete initiatives for cultural, economic, and institutional collaboration. Making the heritage of memory historically preserved between Apulia and the Diaspora a living resource for the present represents, today more than ever, the core commitment of a cultural diplomacy capable of building lasting bridges between nations.
