"Ambassador Vincenzo Del Monaco took office in Kenya on October 13, 2025" by Carlo Coppola
His Excellency Vincenzo Del Monaco has officially assumed the role of Italian Ambassador to Nairobi, Kenya, inaugurating a new chapter in bilateral relations between Italy and one of East Africa's most strategic nations. To represent himself, he has chosen one of the finest works from the historic art collection of the Farnesina: Mario Schifano's "Round-Trip of your Mind" (cover image)—a deliberate choice that reflects his keen insight and extraordinary artistic sensibility.
Born in Rome in 1969, Del Monaco studied law before entering the diplomatic service in 1997, embarking on a distinguished career that has proven exceptional from the outset, leading him to positions of increasing responsibility both at home and abroad. He has held pivotal roles in Beijing, Brussels at Italy's Permanent Representation to the EU, and at the Quirinale Palace. He served as Ambassador to Montenegro and Armenia, and headed the OSCE presence in Albania, where he successfully led the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's mission. Upon returning to Italy, he served as Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy.
His international experience thus spans European, Asian, and Balkans contexts, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of today's geopolitical dynamics—a systemic vision he now brings to the African challenge. In such a global reality, his appointment to safeguard Italian interests in Kenya proves wholly appropriate. The African nation represents a partner of primary importance for Italy, with its dynamic economy and constant vitality. Over the past decade, Nairobi has established itself as East Africa's financial and technological hub, hosting numerous international organizations and serving as a focal point for regional investment. Italian-Kenyan relations encompass multiple dimensions: from economic and commercial cooperation to cultural and educational collaboration, extending to development cooperation projects in key sectors such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and vocational training.
With Ambassador Del Monaco's appointment, new prospects emerge for strengthening Italy's presence. Priorities include developing economic and commercial ties, continuing cooperation projects aligned with the 2030 Agenda, consolidating political dialogue on issues of mutual interest, and supporting the Italian community. Del Monaco's arrival comes at a time when Italy is viewing Africa with renewed strategic interest, as demonstrated by the Mattei Plan for Africa and initiatives aimed at building an equal partnership with African nations.
