"Traces": A Photographic Journey Between Italy and Armenia – Online Presentation by Carlo Coppola

On Tuesday, 8 June 2021, an online presentation will introduce "Tracce", a photographic research project exploring the enduring connections between Italy and Armenia through images, memories and personal stories.

The event will connect participants from three countries and three different time zones: Armenia (5:00 p.m.), Italy (3:00 p.m.) and New York (9:00 a.m.), highlighting the international dimension of the initiative and the worldwide presence of the Armenian community.

Traces is a photographic journey in search of the living ties that continue to unite Italy and Armenia, two countries linked by centuries of cultural, artistic and human exchanges. Through her camera, photographer Patrizia Posillipo follows the hidden paths of ordinary people carrying with them objects, memories and personal stories that transcend national borders, leaving lasting traces of their journeys and experiences.

Strongly supported and promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Yerevan, the project was launched in February 2020 and is now approaching its final stage.

The first phase took the artist to five Italian cities—Casal di Principe, Bari, Naples, Rome and Florence—where she documented the many expressions of Armenian identity preserved within Italian society.

The photographs portray faces, places, symbols and objects that tell the story of the Armenian presence in Italy. Among them is Rupen, photographed in Bari among the traditional carpets for which Armenia has long been renowned. Alongside the portraits, everyday objects become powerful witnesses to memory, illustrating the development and vitality of the Armenian community in Italy.

The project will reach its conclusion with a journey to Armenia, where it will document the lives of Italians living there and explore the traces of Italian culture they have helped to establish and preserve.

A photographic exhibition and an accompanying catalogue, produced by the Embassy of Italy in Armenia, will present to the public the human stories, cultural heritage and emotions gathered throughout this remarkable journey.

The online meeting marks an important milestone in the project, offering an opportunity to share its progress, present its first results and reflect on the stories collected so far. Through the voices of its participants, the audience will retrace the project's itinerary while discovering new connections between Italy and Armenia.
